Mill Valley Front Garden:
The Lawn Was Replaced With A Low-Water Alternative:
Dymondia margaretae 'Silver Carpet'
.  Drought Tolerant Companion Plants With Vibrant Colors And Textures for Year-Round Appeal and New Flagstone Pathways Complete the Transformation.

This front garden in Mill Valley was transformed into a beautiful and vibrant low water garden. The tired lawn was replaced with drought tolerant Dymondia margaretae; a flat spreading groundcover with yellow daisy-like flowers in Summer. (Photos show the groundcover 1 week after planting, and then after several weeks). Dymondia was also planted between the new flagstone pavers. I chose a variety of drought tolerant plants for the beds that provide an abundance of textures and colors in leaf form and blossoms, for year-round appeal and interest. The plant palette includes Rudbeckia (Black-eyed Susan), Echinacea, Teucrium, Carex, Bulbine frutescens 'Orange Form' (one of my favorite plants with orange/yellow flowers that bloom most of the year!) Grasses, Carex, Lavender, Lambs Ears, Penstemon and a stunning Smoke Tree (Cotinus), to name a few.

A few boulders were added in the beds near the sidewalk.  The new curvaceous pathways were constructed with Three Rivers flagstone.
