San Anselmo Back Yard Replaces Lawn

SAN ANSELMO BACK YARD TRANSFORMATION

Project Overview:
Completed Spring of 2021, the landscape areas surrounding this mid-century modern San Anselmo, CA home were completely renovated. The updates for the backyard areas include the replacement of the old concrete patio with a new and expanded modern patio design, edged with polished Mexican pebbles. An adjacent area designated for raised veggie beds was updated with a gravel base that replaces the water-thirsty lawn. Other updates include the replacement of the failing retaining walls on the sloped areas of the landscape, incorporating a leveled sitting area and steps. A new redwood fence was installed on one side of the property. The existing lower retaining wall was updated with a stucco finish that beautifully ties all of the modern enhancements together. The plant palette includes an array of low water plants and trees in the sloped landscape areas and alongside the patios and fence lines.

Design Details:

Lawn areas removed, replaced with Yosemite gravel and raised, galvanized planting beds for edibles.
New, expanded concrete patio with more areas for outdoor living. Edged with polished Mexican pebbles that add a nice contrast and provide permeable areas for drainage.
New i-beam/wood retaining wall terraced design for the sloped garden areas, and new redwood fence along one side of the property.
Refaced existing block retaining wall with a modern stucco finish.
Fruitless Olive trees on the sloped hillside, along with a variety of succulents and other low-water plants that include Lavender 'Provence', Bulbine, Leucadendron, Reed Grasses, Cuphea and others. .
Modern pottery for Citrus trees in patio areas.
An efficient, smart irrigation system.
