SLEEPY HOLLOW GARDEN RETREAT - SAN ANSELMO, CA

Picture

Project Overview:
This San Anselmo (Sleepy Hollow), CA landscape in Marin county was completely redesigned to replace a large portion of the thirsty lawn. An overriding objective was design a colorful, drought-tolerant and plant-filled landscape that is beautiful to gaze upon and garden rooms to relax in. The garden is reminiscent of on a cottage garden design but with Mediterranean, low-water plants. I created curving pathways and planting beds throughout this expansive landscape. The pathways and adjacent open areas were designed with decomposed granite (DG) and flagstone. A stately grouping of columns and pergolas echo the existing columns at the front of the house, and updated to matched the details on the new pergola columns. The plantings include CA native plants and other drought tolerant plants chosen to provide year-round color and appeal. Something is always in bloom in this garden!
Design Details:
  • A series of garden rooms with areas for sitting, dining and leisurely strolling through the beautiful garden
  • Pergola with columns at entrance and side dining area
  • Decomposed Granite (DG) to replace portions of the lawn and for pathways along with flagstone pavers
  • Mediterranean and CA Native plants for high impact, and low-water needs.
  • Forest Pansy trees for privacy, shade, and autumn color
  • Low-voltage lighting fixtures along the pathway offer ambiance, accents and safety.
