TRANQUIL WATER-SIDE LANDSCAPE REMODEL AND LAWN REPLACEMENT - BEL MARIN KEYS, NOVATO, CA
Entertaining and enjoying the views were primary design goals for the owners of this stunning water-side property that is situated on a lagoon that overlooks a bird sanctuary and wetland restoration project in Bel Marin Keys, Novato. In addition to replacing the lawn with low-water plantings, the total renovation included a new Camaru wood deck (a sustainable alternative to Ipe) with built-in benches and large architectural planters. The modern concrete steps and pavers lead down to the water's edge and dock. I included a sunken patio on one side to take in the views near the water's edge and on the other a Buddha statue that provides a focal point, adding to the serene setting. The garden offers biodiversity with the plantings and include CA natives, other Mediterranean plants, grasses and succulents. Dymondia ground-cover creates a natural pathway and and leads to a bench and co-mingles in the areas throughout. Elfin thyme softens the look of the concrete steps planted in between.
In the front landscape the tired water thirsty-lawn was replaced with large, dramatic concrete pavers leading to the home's front entrance. The updated driveway features more of the same large concrete slabs and small pebbles set in a permeable resin in between. A variety of plants for sun and part shade include Japanese Maples and Mondo grass, Dianella, Lomandra Breeze, Bulbine, Foxtail ferns Hellebores and Echeveria 'lipstick' succulents.
